Acupoint: Shoulder Well- Gallbladder 21

Shoulder Well (JianJing) is the 21st Acupoint along the Gall Bladder meridian (flow of energy to and from the organ). It is found on the topmost part of the trapezius muscle and is often used to relax the muscle to effectively treat headaches, neck & shoulder pain and stress.

In her book, Characters of Wisdom, Katz translates the meaning of Acupuncture points based on their character (a more original form of written communication). She explains: “Our shoulders are made to carry the work and burdens of our life and help us to remain balanced as we stand upright between heaven and earth. Here is a deep well of fresh vitality to help shoulder our way in life.”

In Chinese medicine, emotions are closely linked to physical health. Negative emotions such as anger, frustration, and irritability are associated with the Gallbladder. The energetic movement of these emotions is up and out causing symptoms in the upper part of the body like upper body tension, red face, mania, high blood pressure, the inappropriate movement energy upward (ie. nausea, cough, difficulty breathing), lumps and congestion (ie. neck & breast). Stimulating GB21 helps release tension, promote feelings of calm & relaxation, move stagnation and promote the smooth flow of energy in the body.

Because Jian Jing is a great point for encouraging a person to drop down, sink in and let go it is also often used in pregnancy. It facilitates a smoother birth by encouraging the natural flow of energy which includes the relaxation of the many hip & pelvic muscles that support the womb. This point is CONTRAINDICATED FOR USE IN WOMEN LESS THAN 37 WEEKS PREGNANT.
